How to compare it

Chip / panel model

The best way to see through '4K' claims. The chip tells you native resolution, shift mode and the generation.

Chip / panel diagonal(in)

The diagonal of the DMD or LCD/LCoS panel, in inches.

A bigger device usually handles more étendue (more light through the system), has larger pixels (better MTF) and costs more. Compare within one technology only.

Standard: ISO/IEC 21118 Table 1

Marketing traps

  • Chip / panel model: Spec sheets often omit the chip. Teardowns, FCC internal photos and service manuals usually reveal it.

Deep cut

Chip / panel model. Common consumer DMDs: - 0.23″ DLP230NP: 960×540 → 1080p with 4-way shift. - 0.47″ 4K UHD: 1920×1080 with 4-way XPR, ≈8.3 M addressable. - 0.66″: 2716×1528 with 2-way XPR, also ≈8.3 M. The 0.66″ is usually a touch sharper and has a smaller 'border' (the dark-grey frame of unused mirrors).

Chip / panel diagonal. Étendue (area × solid angle) is conserved through an optical system. A small chip forces a fast lens or limits how much of the source's light can be used. That's one reason pico projectors stay dim.

DMD (Digital Micromirror Device)

The DLP chip itself. It is identified by diagonal size and native mirror count. For example, the 0.47" 4K UHD DMD has 1920×1080 mirrors and uses 4-way XPR shifting to address 3840×2160. The 0.66" 4K UHD DMD (DLP660TE) has 2716×1528 mirrors and shows 8.3M on-screen pixels, i.e. 2 positions per mirror. (TI datasheets: DLP471TE/TP, DLP660TE.) Larger DMDs generally give better contrast and sharpness at the same price tier. Because DMD part numbers are public, we can cross-check them against marketing claims. ⚖ imaging.chip_model, imaging.chip_size_in, imaging.native_pixels
