The standards behind projector specs

A projector spec sheet only means something if you know what standard each number was measured against. These are the ones our data sheets are built on. ISO/IEC 21118:2020 is the backbone; everything else fills in what it doesn't cover.

Spec sheets & measurement

What a projector data sheet must contain, and how light output and contrast are measured.

Information to be included in specification sheets: Data projectors

The only international standard that says what a projector spec sheet must list, in what order and with what terms. Light output is a production average, and shipped units must reach at least 80% of the stated figure.

Our data-sheet sections and field names follow its Table 1. Every key on our sheets is marked Required, Optional or our own extension. Explainer →

Measurement and documentation of key performance criteria: fixed-resolution projectors

Defines the 9-point light-output measurement, 4Ă—4 checkerboard contrast and centre-to-corner uniformity. ISO 21118 references it normatively.

Brightness stated "per ISO 21118" is measured this way. We tag measurement method on every brightness value. Explainer →

The original "ANSI lumens" method

The 9-point method that gave "ANSI lumens" its name. ANSI lists it as historical.

We keep ANSI lumens as their own unit. Today the label usually means "9-point, not independently verified". Explainer →

IDMS §15.4 (ICDM)
Color Light Output

Measures red, green and blue output separately and sums them, exposing projectors whose white is boosted by a clear segment.

Shown as colour brightness, never mixed with white lumens. Explainer →

Installation & viewing

Room-level standards we use for calculators and buying guides rather than for spec sheets.

ANSI/AVIXA V201.01:2021
Image System Contrast Ratio (ISCR)

Contrast of the whole system as seen in the room, ambient light included, across four viewing categories from passive viewing to full-motion video.

Why a 3,000:1 projector can look washed out in a lit room. Explainer →

ANSI/AVIXA V202.01:2016
Display Image Size for 2D Content (DISCAS)

How big an image must be for the content and the farthest viewer.

Screen-size guidance in the throw calculator and guides.

SMPTE RP 94
Screen gain measurement

Gain is measured against a Lambertian reference.

Screen gain in the brightness calculators. Explainer →

SMPTE ST 431-1 / DCI
Cinema screen luminance

A nominal 48 cd/m² (14 fL) for cinema presentation.

The "cinema reference" target in our brightness calculators.

Colour & HDR

The gamuts, transfer functions and metadata formats behind colour and HDR claims.

ITU-R BT.709
HDTV

SDR primaries and D65 white.

Rec.709 gamut coverage. Explainer →

SMPTE RP 431-2 / EG 432-1
DCI-P3 and P3-D65

The cinema and HDR-mastering gamut, with two different white points.

We record which white point a P3 figure uses. Explainer →

ITU-R BT.2020
UHDTV

The UHD container gamut.

BT.2020 coverage, always with its metric and CIE space. Explainer →

ITU-R BT.1886
SDR reference EOTF

The reference gamma for SDR displays.

Gamma presets.

SMPTE ST 2084 / ST 2086
PQ and mastering metadata

The base of HDR10.

HDR10 support. Explainer →

ITU-R BT.2100
HDR television

Defines both PQ and HLG.

HLG support. Explainer →

CIE 1931 xy / CIE 1976 u′v′
Chromaticity diagrams

The two spaces gamut percentages are quoted in. The same projector scores differently in each.

Every gamut figure stores its space and whether it is coverage or area. Explainer →

Noise & power

How fan noise and power draw are stated.

ISO 7779:2018
Airborne noise of IT equipment

Sound power, in bels. ISO 21118 points to it.

Kept apart from dB sound pressure. Explainer →

ISO 11201
Emission sound pressure

Sound pressure at a bystander position, in dB.

Fan noise with its mode. Explainer →

IEC 62471-5:2015
Photobiological safety of image projectors

Risk groups RG0 to RG3 by how hazardous the beam is to look into.

Risk group on the sheet; it matters most for ultra-short-throw and portable lasers. Explainer →

IEC 60825-1:2014
