4K at 60 Hz, 10-bit 4:4:4 needs a 594.0 MHz pixel clock and 17.82 Gbps of video data, which is 22.28 Gbps on a TMDS link or about 20.05 Gbps on an FRL link. HDMI 2.0 (TMDS) (18 Gbps) cannot carry it; HDMI 2.1 FRL 40G (40 Gbps) carries it; HDMI 2.1 FRL 48G (48 Gbps) carries it.

Required rate counts blanking, using CTA-861 total raster sizes. For FRL this is a conservative estimate: real FRL packs blanking more efficiently, so results close to a limit can go either way. DSC compression is not modelled. Fractional rates (59.94 Hz) need 0.1% less.

How to compare it

HDMI port count

Count *full-feature* ports. Often only one carries 4K HDR or eARC.

Max input signal

The highest resolution and refresh accepted, e.g. 4K120, 4K60, 1080p240.

Only means anything next to native resolution. 4K input on a 1080p device is a downscale.

Standard: ISO/IEC 21118 items 17.1/17.2

Marketing traps

  • Max input signal: 'Supports 4K' is the most common resolution lie on budget listings.

Supported (input) resolution

The highest signal the projector will accept. ⚠ This is the standard Amazon trap: "Supports 4K" on a 720p-native LCD. Never use input resolution as the headline resolution. ⚖ inputs.max_input_resolution

HDMI version & ports

Count, version (1.4/2.0/2.1), max bandwidth (HDMI 2.0: 18 Gbps; 2.1: up to 48 Gbps, with some chips limited to lower FRL rates such as 40; HDMI 2.2, released June 2025: 96 Gbps), HDCP version (Netflix requires HDCP 2.2 or later for 4K). ⚖ inputs.hdmi_count, inputs.hdmi_version_max, inputs.hdmi_bandwidth_gbps, inputs.hdcp_version
